Lake Baikal was formed about 30 million years ago and is the oldest and deepest lake in the world. It contains 20% of the world’s total unfrozen freshwater reserve that meets the best quality standards for clean drinking water.

A unique feature of Lake Baikal is the great diversity and endemism of plants and animals living in it, of which 2/3 are endemic and are not found anywhere else on the Earth.

In 1996 Lake Baikal was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites due to its uniqueness. Since ancient times, the lake has been considered as a sacred center of Eastern Siberia and South Asia and is still called the “Holy Baikal”. A special spiritual culture was formed around the lake by the Buryat people. At the beginning of the 20th century, the “Buryat Nostradamus” lived here - a prophet, sage and folk philosopher Varnashka, who accurately predicted many great events of the era.

Since ancient times, Baikal has been called the Holy Sea, glorious, gray-haired and formidable. There are many epithets for Baikal that can be emphasized: a world source of drinking water, a blue eye of Siberia, an oasis of the virgin nature of the Earth, a sacred center of North Asia, a divine creation, a sacred gift of nature, a natural monument with unique landscapes, a priceless treasury of the genetic wealth of the Earth, a miracle of limnology, a center of unique natural values.
